An Eastern Wisconsin Senator is looking to give victims of child abuse easier access to help.
Senator Andre Jacque, along with Representative Rick Gundrum of Slinger, have introduced a bill that would require the posting of the child abuse and neglect reporting hotline in a conspicuous public location in each school building.
The example sign is one created by the Child Advocacy Center, which is used in other states.
It uses the clear, concise language of “Say no, go to a safe place, and tell a trusted adult…Don’t ever keep a secret that upsets you.”
Sen. Jacque highlighted the Center for Child Advocacy statistics of “The median age of a child who is sexually abused is 9 years old, 60% of women who are incarcerated had been sexually abused, and 45% of pregnant teens report a history of sexual abuse.”
43 other states have passed similar legislation, which is also supported by the Wisconsin Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, as well as the Kids Protection Agency and Wisconsin Family Action.
