A bill in the US House on voting is being supported by Wisconsin’s Sixth District congressman.
Congressman Glenn Grothman, who represents Manitowoc County in Washington, has thrown his support behind the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility or SAVE Act.
According to the Glenbeulah Republican, those who crossed the US-Mexico border illegally can get access to get things like a driver’s license and access public benefits.
Grothman says it means illegal aliens can get access to be able to vote, which is illegal under federal law.
However, another bill called the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) prevents states from requiring meaningful proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.
The SAVE Act would amend the NVRA to require all individuals registering to vote in a federal election to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship and identity, regardless of whether the registration occurs at a DMV, a social services agency, or by mail.
Grothman calls the bill commonsense.
Democrats say the bill would hurt all US citizens since more than 9% of voters don’t have documents like a passport, birth certificate, or naturalization papers readily available.
They also say it would affect married women because they change their name from their birth name.
