The Wisconsin DNR reminds residents that fire danger in much of the state is either “high” or “very high.”
This past weekend, the elevated danger resulted in 63 wildfires burning 135 acres of land.
The upcoming dry weather and very high winds forecasted through this Wednesday significantly increases fire risk across the Badger State, including in Manitowoc and surrounding counties.
Along with burning permit restrictions, the DNR announced it will be staffing all available fire equipment across the state and shifting resources to areas with elevated fire risk.
Manitowoc, Sheboygan, Calumet, and Kewaunee Counties don’t require DNR burning permits, but townships might.
The DNR reminds residents to always double-check to make sure a fire is put out after seeing an increase in the number of wildfires started from burns not fully extinguished.
In 2025, the DNR responded to nearly 500 wildfires that burned 2,000 acres.
Local fire departments have also responded to numerous wildfires.
This is almost double the number of fires in a typical year, and 49% of the fires this year have been caused by debris burning.
