Police in Green Bay are warning residents and social media users of a new scam that hits close to home.
The Green Bay Police Department has shared on Facebook that an anonymous user made a post falsely claiming that a police officer in the city was missing.
The post was made on the Green Bay buy-sell-trade page titled “URGENT UPDATE: POLICE OFFICER MISSING in Green Bay.”
It continued to describe a police officer named Kate McArthur who was reported missing this week.
Green Bay PD has confirmed that an officer is not missing but rather this post is part of a nationwide social media scam.
The post lacks specific details, such as no date, time, the police department they worked for, or contact information.
Authorities have noted that a lack of such details is a telltale sign that a post is suspicious and often fraudulent.
Many times, such posts by scammers will ask users to share the post before they go back and edit the post to be an advertisement for a shady business or other form of scam.
The Green Bay Police Department again has assured the public that none of their officers have been reported missing, and they urge anyone who encounters the post to not share it.
