Some language changes have been made in the Manitowoc Public School District for naming rights of facilities.
Board Member “Biff” Hansen explained that the district’s Personnel and Policy Committee made some changes to the policy, including adding language requiring a person who wants to name something after someone to meet with the superintendent and the committee.
The full board would then decide if a facility can be named.
A donation from the Jones family was made during last month’s school board meeting to complete the reconstruction of the Lincoln High School baseball field.
Maurice Jones then requested that the field be named after current coach Bruce Steinbecker.
Hansen says he’s received public input from people wanting to have the field named after a different coach.
Language was also updated to make sure the person would have to show “exemplary moral character, make an outstanding contribution to education, humanity or community, and must have displayed outstanding leadership.”
The MPSD board voted unanimously to approve the changes for naming rights last night (April 8th).
Last month, the board voted to remove language that the person has to have died before a place is named after them.
