The City of Manitowoc is looking to completely redevelop Red Arrow Beach.
The city’s Public Infrastructure Committee heard a presentation from raSmith last week about the concept design to provide better access to the beach, which could include accessible ramps for people with disabilities and new paths with stairs from the parking lot to the pedestrian path that goes by the beach.
The plan would also add stone seating that would face a large platform that could be used for performances or events.
A significant change to the area would be making the parking lot with access to the beach a one-way road.
Parks and Recreation Manager Curtis Hall explained that the first parking lot by the Veteran Memorial will remain a two-way street.
“And it would turn to one-way at the curve, right by the playground,” he stated. “That’s where most of the traffic issues start, and our pedestrian issues start. There’s a crossing to get from the Veteran memorials to the playground. There’s a crosswalk, so that’s where that one-way would start. And the people would have to continue on an exit on Green Street if they go beyond the curve.”
Speed bumps would also be added to slow traffic down.
Rob Williams with raSmith says the project would cost between $1.3-$1.5 million for everything in a rendering.
Manitowoc’s Public Infrastructure Committee didn’t act on the presentation, but it could be approved by the Common Council in a future meeting.
