As part of their investigation, the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) has identified the man recently killed by a deputy in Fond du Lac County.
The investigation, being led by the DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), has revealed that 26-year-old Armando Mendez Berry was fatally shot by Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Kohlmann on February 24th.
On the 24th of February, Mendez Berry contacted authorities to say that he had a felony warrant out for his arrest and wished to turn himself in.
The same day, authorities received another call stating that the 26-year-old was seen with what looked to be a firearm in his waistband.
After being located by Sheriff’s deputies, Mendez Berry refused to follow commands, causing a deputy to fire non-lethal rounds at him.
Shortly after, Mendez Berry was seen holding what law enforcement believed to be a gun, causing Deputy Kohlmann to shoot the suspect.
Life-saving measures were attempted at the scene, however, Mendez Berry was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Additionally, Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney has said the suspected firearm collected at the scene was a realistic-looking CO2 Pellet/BB handgun.
The DCI’s investigation into the matter remains ongoing, but this release of new information was given for transparency with the public.
