A sunken ship in Lake Michigan has been named to the Wisconsin State Register of Historic Places.
The Margaret A. Muir was constructed by Owner David Muir in Manitowoc in 1872.
The vessel transported grain, lumber, and other bulk cargo to and from Great Lakes ports throughout its career.
In September 1893, Maragaret A. Muir was sailing on Lake Michigan bound for South Chicago with a cargo of salt when it was hit by a gale.
According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, the ship battled through the night until an enormous wave broke over the dank and sank near the City of Algoma.
The crew was able to make it to shore.
The Wisconsin Historical Society presented a certificate to Wisconsin Maritime Museum Director Kevin Cullen and Robert Jaeck, a board member of the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association.
