Two local state legislators have introduced a bill they say will extend treatment alternative and diversion (TAD) programs.
Representative Paul Tittl of Manitowoc and Senator Andre Jacque of New Franken’s bill would allow TAD programs to include individuals with a mental health diagnosis.
These programs are designed to offer alcohol or drug treatment services as alternatives to prosecution or incarceration, and Tittl said they aim to “reduce recidivism and increase public safety.”
TAD maximizes the use of limited criminal justice resources by establishing a state and local partnership.
It implements a continuum of community-based services and intermediate sanctions that will increase efficiencies.
The result is decreased costs associated with state and county criminal justice systems.
Tittl also noted, “The expansion of the TAD program will save dollars and get non-violent offenders the mental health help they need.”
