It’s going to take about another month before Manitowoc County learns how much they’ve made from the new sales tax.
County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that it’s too early to tell because merchants file sales tax information on a quarterly basis and predicted, “We’ll have a good idea at the end of April for the first quarter.”
He says larger businesses like Walmart and Pick N’ Save file their sales tax reports every month, so there will be some money coming in.
“It takes, I think, about a month to get the money back from the state after they get it,” he said. “So, we just need to have patience.”
The County Executive says more information will come out in the summer.
The Manitowoc County Board of Supervisors voted last year to implement the sales tax after a deficit in the Human Services budget.
Ziegelbauer said while he’s not completely in favor of the tax, it’s “necessary for Manitowoc County’s long term financial health and will enable us to deliver quality services to all our citizens.”
