The head coach and owner of the Sheboygan County SaberCats semi-pro football team made a major announcement on the latest episode of the On the Line Podcast.
T.J. Schouten founded the team in 2020 and has led the squad to two league championships and four trips to the championship game.
However, after this year, Schouten says he is hanging up the whistle.
“I’ve done semi-pro football for the summer since I was 22. Haven’t had a normal summer for 18 years,” he explained. “So right now it’s a big part is setting the things up to where the team’s still going to carry on success.”
Part of that succession plan comes in the form of Steve Strong, a player who helped found the team and has been a high-impact receiver on the field.
“Steve will actually be taking over the team as the owner when I’m done,” he announced. “We’ve got some coaches in play right now too where, when I’m done, hopefully they’re going to be able to take over to where we don’t miss a beat.”
Strong will be on the podcast on March 18th.
TJ and his team have a lofty goal as he rides into the sunset.
He told Evan and Ryan, “Right now, our main goal, of course, is a league championship and our end goals, we want to make it to a (National Championship).”
The Midwest United Football League has bolstered the competition by bringing in numerous teams that have had great success, including the Illinois Cowboys, the River City Roughriders, the Brown County Blackjacks, and the St. Paul Pioneers.
