The spearing season for sturgeon on the Winnebago came to an end this weekend.
The sturgeon spearing season officially ended on Sunday (February 23rd) after once again hitting the 16-day limit as opposed to the harvest caps set by the DNR.
The season’s final day saw 58 total sturgeons caught between Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes.
The final day was highlighted by two 60-plus-inch sturgeons speared through the same hole within an hour of one another.
Despite not hitting the harvest caps on Lake Winnebago or the Upriver Lakes, the 943 fish harvested during the season is good for more than double last year’s number.
Poor ice and weather conditions, in addition to poor water clarity, have played a role in numbers being down over the last two years; however, most anglers were able to persevere conditions this year to improve on last year’s harvest.
63 sturgeon harvested topped the 100-pound mark, good for roughly six percent of the total weight harvested.
