Lakeland University athletes went all out for a donation competition for an area food bank.
The Lakeland wrestling team claimed the Headlocking Hunger championship belt after collecting the most food to be donated to the Sheboygan County Food Bank in a competition last month amongst the university’s athletic teams.
In the inaugural Headlocking Hunger event, the wrestling team collected and donated 3,492 pounds of food to the food bank, while softball finished second and the women’s basketball team came in third.
After receiving the donation, Lizabeth Kroll, Sheboygan County Food Bank senior director of program and community impact, said, “Your donation is timely and especially appreciated as our neighbors continue to struggle with inflation.”
The new event at Lakeland was created by men’s wrestling head coach Mike DeRoehn who also introduced a similar event during his time at UW-Platteville.
Coach DeRoehn said, “While we are trying to win wrestling matches, we’re also giving our Muskies opportunities to grow as people and learn how important it is to help others.”
