Congressman Glenn Grothman is bringing back a bill he says will “defend innovation and combat government overreach.”
The No Industrial Restrictions in Secret Act, or No IRIS Act, was first introduced around this time last year, and is co-sponsored by Representatives Jake Ellzy of Texas, Julie Letlow of Louisiana, and Michaela Guest of Mississippi.
Grothman says the bill has a goal of reducing undue red tape imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS).
He elaborated, saying, “Unelected bureaucrats have often disrupted the work of Wisconsin’s chemical manufacturers and inhibited the success of the industry through the abuse of the EPA’s IRIS program. Instead of grounding regulatory decisions in sound science, IRIS has demonstrated a poor track record by issuing assessments that conflict with the industry’s best available scientific expertise and methodologies.”
The measure has received support from the American Chemistry Council, Hexion Specialty Chemicals, who has a manufacturing plant in Sheboygan, and over 80 manufacturers around the country.
