The Humane Society of Sheboygan County is urging pet owners to check microchips.
A microchip company named Save This Life has suddenly and without notice, shut down.
Save This Life has been used by numerous animal clinics and shelters for the last 13 years, meaning that if your pet has one of their chips, they could be at risk.
This is an urgent risk for pet owners because Save This Life has unlinked their database from the national registries.
This means that if your pet has one of their chips and becomes lost, shelters, veterinary hospitals, or police departments will have no way to retrieve your contact info.
If your pet’s microchip number starts with 991 or 900164, they have a Save This Life chip and must be registered with a different company.
The Humane Society of Sheboygan County has assured that this situation does not affect their adopters or adoptees as they use Home Again microchips.
Pet owners can schedule an appointment with the Humane Society in Sheboygan to check the status of a pet’s chip by calling 920-458-2012, extension 104.
Additional options for microchip providers can be found by visiting the Sheboygan County Humane Society’s Facebook page.
