A local organization committed to supporting veterans will be holding a fundraising event to help a man in need of medical treatment.
Patriot Riders of America Chapter Two of Manitowoc will be holding its third annual Chili Competition and Bake Sale on Saturday, March 1st, at City Limits Bar and Banquet Hall.
The event will have 20 competitors battling to have their chili recipe named the best.
The entry fee for contestants, as well as those wishing to be chili tasters or judges, is $10 per person.
Jenny Matte, Vice President of Manitowoc’s Patriot Riders chapter, recently joined the WCUB Breakfast Club to speak more on what else the chili cook-off will entail.
“We are also going to have 50/50 cash raffles, we would like to run two during that day,” she explained. “We are going to have raffle baskets and silent auctions, as well as a bake sale and live music from Buckshot.”
This year’s fundraising efforts will support Tom Traurig, a United States Navy Veteran and retired City of Manitowoc Police Officer.
Tom suffered two seizures, which resulted in a broken neck. Tom’s wife, Linda Traurig, also joined Matte on the Breakfast Club to share some details on his situation and his recovery.
While his rehabilitation has been positive, it has reached a recent change.
She noted that Tom “is doing rehab, OT, physical therapy, and respiratory therapy, and now he’s advanced to the level where he needs to go to a facility that treats spinal cord injuries, and that’s the VA in Milwaukee.”
Fundraising at the event will assist the Traurigs in buying a wheelchair-accessible van, allowing Tom to make trips to the VA in Milwaukee two to three times a week.
