Authorities in Fond du Lac County are urging anglers to be cautious ahead of the opening of sturgeon spearing season.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office has shared drone images of Lake Winnebago, revealing some potentially dangerous ice conditions as the sturgeon spearing season is set to kick off on Saturday (February 8th).
These images show that, while there is over a foot of ice offshore, getting to that thicker ice is proving to be a challenge.
The Sheriff’s Office has been responding to numerous reports of vehicles, ATVs, and UTVs falling through the ice.
This comes after a UTV fell through the ice this weekend, killing one and giving another hypothermia.
With ice conditions changing daily, there are currently portions of open water and large cracks for anglers to contend with.
Sheriff’s Deputies in Fond du Lac County tell residents to stay up to date with local fishing clubs who monitor these conditions and provide updates via social media.
