The Wisconsin Maritime Museum has opened a new exhibit that brings boating and food together.
Executive Director Kevin Cullen explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that the new exhibit From Lake to Plate: Local Fishing Family and Food Ways will make you leave wanting to go out for a fish fry after exploring.
The exhibition opened in January and is the work of two photographers who took pictures of fishers on Lake Michigan and the Bay of Green Bay.
One of the photographers has a father who owned Empire Fish, a wholesale fish seller out of Milwaukee.
“And so it was his dad’s photography of the people working at Empire Fish that inspired this exhibit,” he explained. “So, it’s the people behind the fish that we love to eat.”
Cullen says there’s a connection between the fishers and all of us.
“At least with our Friday Fish Fry,” he noted. “And we wanted to be able to kind of illustrate and show who these folks are and in their own words. So, there’s interviews and their quotes.”
The executive director continues, saying the exhibit’s process starts with seeing the fish being caught and continues the processing behind the scenes in the factories.
Visitors will then leave seeing the fish you’d get during a fish fry.
The exhibit will be open until October, and programs focused on it will be held throughout the summer.
