The Wisconsin Maritime Museum continues to raise funds to dry dock the USS Cobia.
During the month of February, it will hold a special program called 28 Boats for 28 Days.
Museum Communications Director Emily Shedal says this is the third year of the campaign celebrating the 28 submarines built in Manitowoc during WWII.
Shedal stated, “We’re almost at $1,000,000 for our dry dock campaign and our goal is $1.5 million, so we’ve got a little ways to go yet.”
The maritime museum is asking for $28 donations to dry dock the Cobia.
If more is donated, those who give could win special Cobia souvenirs.
“The past few years we’ve done retired deck wood from the Cobia,” she explained. “That’s been made into coin holders, pens. We’ve got a wonderful volunteer who handcrafted those items for us.”
The USS Peto and Pogy were remembered over the weekend, while today’s focus is on the USS Pompon.
Wisconsin Maritime Museum Submarine Coordinator Karen Duvalle told Seehafernews.com back in June that getting Cobia out of the water allows for inspections and upgrades if needed.
The submarine will be taken to a company in Sturgeon Bay for cleaning.
