Police in Sheboygan have dispelled a recent rumor circulating on social media.
The Sheboygan Police Department stated that a social media post was alleging that an officer asked a teenager in the city for proof of citizenship.
Authorities have since spoken with the teen involved and established that the incident did not occur as it was depicted online.
The teenager’s account of the incident states he was stopped while skateboarding in the street after dark and officers were unable to verify if anyone within the Sheboygan Police Department contacted him.
In response, the department has said it “does not tolerate biased policing and has taken steps, including policy development and regular training on how implicit bias affects everyone.”
They also acknowledged that there is considerable anxiety and uncertainty involving immigration enforcement at the moment and continued to say, “It has never been the authority of the Sheboygan Police Department, or any other local or state agency, to investigate or enforce federal immigration law.”
