With tax season in full swing, the City of Sheboygan has shared some data regarding the 2024 tax levy.
In Sheboygan, the overall levy for all taxing jurisdictions increased by 4.18 percent in 2024 compared to 2023.
This increase has been caused by numerous factors including city spending increases, the Sheboygan Area School District passing a referendum in 2024, and a decrease in state credits.
Another reason Sheboygan homeowners may see an increase in taxes paid this tax season is tied to an increase in property revaluation hikes.
Over the past five years, there has been a significant shift in the city’s value from commercial and manufacturing properties to residential properties.
What this means is that residential properties are being valued at a substantially higher rate than commercial and manufacturing properties, thus shifting a greater tax burden on homeowners.
Since 2020, residential properties in Sheboygan have seen an over 69 percent increase in assessed value compared to a 36 percent increase for commercial properties and a 30 percent increase for manufacturing properties.
This data shows that homeowners, particularly those with increasing property values, are now responsible for a greater share of the overall tax levy.
