The City of Two Rivers wants to create a “Resilient Waterfront Parkland.”
The City Council approved a professional services agreement with Stantec Consulting to develop plans to make the area more resilient due to fluctuating water levels in Lake Michigan.
The agreement also means Stantec will see how more public access can be allowed on the publicly owned shoreline area that starts from the Harbor South past the city limits to the vicinity of the Chamber Manitowoc County property.
Some of the work that could be done after a study could include widening the public beach and moving sand to improve the lakefront area.
According to the work session documents, Two Rivers has been experiencing significant changes happening in Lake Michigan, like record high lake levels and severe storms, which have caused erosion for the stretch of land they want to improve.
The city is also interested in reducing maintenance and dredging the outer channel of the Two Rivers Harbor. Stantec will do a shoreline stabilization study first before any work starts.
So far, about $405,300 has been funded through grants the city applied for.
The council also approved a funding agreement with the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, which will provide another $135,000 in funding for the resilient waterfront parkland.
