A proposed battery storage facility project in Two Rivers will take longer than originally planned.
The Two Rivers City Council unanimously approved a four-year extension for Hawk Energy Storage LLC for a battery energy storage system.
Tenaska, a Nebraska company wanting to create the battery storage facility, contacted City Manager Greg Buckley after they realized a $32 million increase in network upgrades from MISO or the Midcontinent Independent System Operator Inc. during a Phase 2 study.
Because of the increase, the project was withdrawn from the interconnection queue. Buckley told the council that Tenaska was already paying $47,000 for a 9.5-acre property in the Woodland Industrial Park, so they wanted the extension to get the project back.
So the company is asking for a four-year extension,” Buckley noted.
“They tell me they intend to get back in the queue for consideration. But this is obviously going to set the project back by two or three year, I’d say. Because when they met with the council two years ago for the conditional use permit, to be considered, there was a discussion that this possibly would be a 2025 construction.”
Councilmembers asked if someone else could buy the land, to which Buckley said.

The battery storage facility would be 150 megawatts, which would produce 600 megawatt hours.
The agreement also included an increase in city payments to pay for land to $55,000.
The council approved the Conditional Use Permit in February last year.
