The City of Sheboygan officially has a new Police Chief.
At Monday’s (January 20th) Common Council meeting, Kurt Zempel was sworn in by City Clerk Meredith Debruin, marking a new chapter in Zempel’s nearly 22-year career with the Sheboygan Police Department.
Many were in attendance for the meeting, including family, friends, and community members in support of the department and its brand-new Chief of Police.
When addressing the support shown, Zempel said, “It not only reassures us that we are on the right path, but it is absolutely the only way that we can continue to succeed in creating public safety.”
Following the swearing-in, Zempel was met with roaring applause and had his new badge pinned on by his son.
As Chief Zempel continued to speak, he noted the great improvements made in Sheboygan over the last two decades, noting that the likelihood of anyone becoming a victim in the city is at historic lows.
However, he also said, “We should all be very proud of that and appreciate what a great and safe community we’ve built in Sheboygan. But this does not mean we get to take a break.”
Zempel finished off his speech by thanking everyone in his career who has supported and mentored him over his 20-plus years on the force.
Chief Zempel is replacing the former Police Chief, Chris Domagalski, who recently retired after 15 years in the position.
