A construction company has been tasked with helping get the Mirro property ready for development.
The Manitowoc Common Council approved a winning bid for removing the remaining contaminated soils, demolishing the remaining concrete slab, and demolishing and abandoning the utility tunnel below the surface.
Mayor Justin Nickels says, most importantly, clean fill will be imported, and topsoil for greenspace and granular fill will be ready for where the building and sidewalks will be.
Funding for the project comes from a $1.9 million federal grant through the bipartisan infrastructure law that the city got in 2024.
Nickels says the city has been working with a developer to construct a 59-unit workforce housing project.
The developers succeeded in a previous application for the property; however, construction would not have started without the cleanup grant.
It’s not yet known when construction will begin.
