Manitowoc Public Utilities is offering some tips for residents who use space heaters.
MPU says while space heaters are great for areas that can be cold, they do come with consequences.
Electric space heaters can significantly increase a resident’s electric bill with other ones costing an average of $20 a month to run for five hours.
If not used properly, they can also become a fire hazard. MPU recommends using a space heater sparingly and choosing a newer, energy-efficient model that can adjust to provide the exact level of heat required.
It’s also recommended to leave at least four feet of space between a heater and nearby curtains or furniture.
Lastly, don’t plug a space heater into an extension cord because it can overheat if used constantly.
