The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) is recommending homeowners to test for Radon.
Radon is an odorless, colorless gas that can leak into homes from the soil they sit on.
It is also a cancer-causing, radioactive gas, which is why the DHS has deemed January Radon Action Month.
Radon exposure is also the second leading cause of lung cancer, behind only smoking cigarettes.
In Wisconsin, one in ten homes has elevated levels of the harmful gas, and testing for it is inexpensive and easy to do yourself.
DHS State Health Officer Paula Tran said, “Knowing about radon and testing radon levels in your home can save lives.”
In Outagamie County, radon tests are supplied free of charge by visiting the County Public Health Division’s vending machine located at 320 South Walnut Street in Appleton.
