Over the past several months, scammers have been spoofing the phone numbers of local law enforcement agencies, and the Calumet County Sheriff’s Office is the latest entity added to the list.
It is reported that a caller told citizens that they were Lieutenant Craig Wensle with the Department.
They then asked a resident to take $6000 to a kiosk in Oshkosh and deposit it as Bitcoin.
The scammer claimed she had missed jury duty and had a federal warrant, and failure to pay the money would result in their arrest.
The Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents that they will never call and ask you to deposit money into a kiosk.
They also do not accept Bitcoin, gift cards, or any other unorthodox forms of payment, and payments are required to be made at the Sheriff’s Office.
The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office also noted that if you have a warrant out for your arrest, they will stop in person to conduct that warrant.
As always, if you believe you have been the target of a scammer, hang up and call the entity claiming to contact you directly.
