The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a new type of scam.
The “brushing scam” is when an unexpected item is delivered to a resident’s front door.
The box typically contains items like rings, bracelets, necklaces, or Bluetooth speakers, but the package does not include who sent the item.
Instead, the scammer will place a QR code inside the box, which, when scanned, will send the information on the phone to the scammer.
This includes all personal and financial information, which typically leads to the target’s bank account getting drained.
If you receive a package you weren’t expecting, and it has a QR code inside, the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents not to scan the code.
As far as the item inside is concerned, that is now yours, and you can do with it as you please.
