Manitowoc Public Utilities is reminding residents how to avoid frozen water pipes.
The biggest rule from MPU is that damage from frozen water meters will be paid for by the customer, so avoiding such an issue is the best course of action.
MPU says proper insulation or a heat source in crawl spaces, cold spaces, or any other area where pipes are subject to freeze is important to avoid a frozen water meter or worse.
Another tip is to ensure windows are properly sealed and consider installing storm windows in the basement and that outdoor water meter pits have covers that fit properly and there are no cracks into which cold wind could blow.
The pipes, valves, and the water meter inside such pits should not touch the concrete walls.
If pipes become frozen, never use an open torch or flame to thaw it out, but rather use a hair dryer or electric heat tape.
