The stigma surrounding drug and alcohol addiction is one that is prevalent in many areas of our lives.
Many TV shows throughout the years have poked fun at the “town drunk” or the “crackhead on the corner”, but at the end of the day, those people are just that.
People.
Lighthouse Recovery Community Center is continuing its fight to end the stigma, which Marketing and Outreach Coordinator Brianne Neeb says is a tough one to break.
However, Neeb says the local recovery center is doing its best to break it in all sections of the community, “Whether it be with police officers, E.R. nurses or people that are just in the community that don’t understand addiction.”
Those who want to learn more about addiction are encouraged to participate in Lighthouse’s Breaking the Stigma events on the second Saturday of each month.
Brianne can attest that the program works.
“I did a Breaking the Stigma with my brother and he was one that was like, ‘You’re an addict. You’re always going to be an addict,'” she revealed. “I’m living proof that I’m clean and sober for four years. And we have the closest relationship that we’ve ever had today.”
