Monroe Elementary School in Manitowoc paid tribute to our nation’s heroes on Veteran’s Day with a unique event.
Veterans from the area, including many student’s parents, walked through the halls of the school to cheers and applause from the students and staff.
Melinda Schrieber the president of the PTA organized the parade, partially in honor of one of her family members.
“My cousin was a former student here,” she explained. “There’s a tree out in front that was dedicated that says he was killed in action October 13th, 2010. We thought (this event) was a good way of giving back.”
Lyla Hanson, a 3rd grade student at Monroe tells SeehaferNews.com that her class made some artwork to prepare for the parade.
“We were drawing pictures of veterans and flags,” she explained.
Layla’s drawing was of her father, who served in the Marines, along side a tank and an American flag.
Schreiber also told us that leading up to the celebration, Monroe students and staff collected over $420 through a coin drive, which will be donated to the Dark Horse Lodge, which is a retreat for veterans located in Tennessee.
