A Manitowoc football icon is coming back to the area to help raise money for veterans in the fall.
Don Davey, a member of the 1980s Manitowoc Lincoln football dynasty who went on to be drafted by the Green Bay Packers, is now a triathlete, and will be conducting a roughly 700-mile bike tour through Wisconsin in September.
Davey tells Seehafer News that this event is a collaborative effort.
“We are bringing together three great organizations, three charities that I’ve been involved with for the last several years. The first is a Team One Mile,” he explained. “Team One Mile is a Wisconsin-based charity that brings together athletes and military veterans to do some kind of epic feat each year in hopes of raising money for military veterans.”
For Don, aiding veterans is something that is near and dear to his heart.
“My father was a marine, served in the Marines for 13 years,” he noted. “I thought this would be a great way to honor his legacy.”
Davey tells us he and the rest of the cyclists will be putting on roughly 120 miles per day starting on September 9th, and will make several stops along the way.
He explained that his team will be “leaving from Milwaukee, heading over to La Crosse, up to Wausau, Green Bay, swinging through Manitowoc, and then finishing off down in Milwaukee again.”
All of the work by Davey and Team One Mile has paid off immensely, as he reported, “Through this journey, we’ve already raised over $100,000 to benefit military families.”
Davey tells us he is also competing in the Ironman Wisconsin race in Madison on September 7th, in partnership with Firehouse Subs.
Davey, who owns several Firehouse Subs restaurants, has been able to donate over $500,000 worth of lifesaving equipment to police and firefighters throughout Wisconsin this year alone.
At the Ironman Wisconsin, another grant will be donated, continuing to show the true character of Don Davey.
