A man from western Wisconsin has been sentenced to life in prison in Florida for a murder he committed in an attempt to finance his fight against the Venezuelan government.
A judge in Fort Myers handed down the life sentence to Alex Zwiefelhofer from Bloomer on Tuesday.
Zwiefelhofer was convicted of killing a Florida couple during a robbery in 2018. Prosecutors say he intended to use the stolen money to travel to Venezuela and join the fight against the government there.
Zwiefelhofer had previously fought in Ukraine and served in the U.S. Army before going AWOL in 2017.
