A relatively new gym in Two Rivers is looking to help breed the next generation of great athletes.
Brian Gallagher appeared on the latest episode of the On the Line Podcast, where he explained the dream started after he got back from a military deployment.
He said the idea had been on his mind for years, but his wife gave him the push he needed.
“She is the one that said, ‘Quit your job. Start this. If it fails, you can always go back to your old job,’” Gallagher recalled.
“I was like, All right. Put the two weeks in, and I was done.”
Darkside officially opened not long after Christmas 2023 and has just reached 40 members.
Galagher is one of three coaches at the gym, each of whom specializes in different aspects of training.
“Lewis Kumbalek, who is a three-time state champ, powerlifter…held the record in the deadlift at 181,” Gallagher explained.
“And then Chris Kozlowski, he is a speed coach, and he was a tenure track coach.”
He and show co-host Evan Smith also dispelled a popular rumor that weightlifting stunts growth in children.
“Poppycock,” Evan said bluntly.
“That’s like you’ve got to wait 30 minutes to swim after you eat anything.”
Brian, who has nearly completed his Bachelor’s Degree on the topic, elaborated, saying, “I would say it (allows) the growth hormone to be released by the pituitary gland in your body sooner.”
