The big attention-grabbing headlines surrounding drug use usually falls on the arrests, or the actions of those abusing substances.
What doesn’t get as much coverage are the many former abusers who are going through the recovery process.
Many former users receive help from various sources, including the Lighthouse Recovery Community Center in Manitowoc.
During a recent episode of the A Light of Hope Podcast, Alex Hunt, the Programing Director at Lighthouse, spoke about advocacy and how the organization helps those who are trying to kick the habit.
“We are trying to advocate for them to receive services. We are trying to advocate for them at their court dates, with their probation officer. Whatever the situation is,” he explained. “Whatever they are trying to gain access to, get back, or walk through, our staff, our coaches are going to be advocating for them in those situations.”
But advocacy is not just for the folks at Lighthouse.
Hunt notes that it also involved the general public reaching out to their local, state, and federal representatives in politics.
“The important thing is making your voice heard,” he said. “I think it gets drowned out a lot these days in politics. The common people don’t think they have a lot of power when it comes to influencing politicians and government, things like that. Even something as simple as writing a letter to your congressman, your senator, or whatever, can have a really big impact.”
Hunt also encouraged the public to speak with someone who is going through the recovery process to see what it all entails and why they can use all the support they can get.
