Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig
Manitowoc County’s Sheriff is giving praise for driver’s license legislation in Madison.
Sheriff Dan Hartwig said on WOMT’s Be My Guest that Wisconsin Bill 2023 Act 57 allows residents to add one emergency contact to their driver’s license which can help someone if they’re involved in a crash or having a medical emergency.
“This information may save crucial time if it ever becomes necessary to contact family members or other loved ones.”
Hartwig continues saying this will benefit law enforcement because not everyone has been in contact with law enforcement, so they might not have any records on a person if they are involved in a crash and need some type of medical attention.
“It’s crucial for law enforcement or medical personnel to be able to notify next of kin or a loved one if someone is hurt or seriously injured,” he described. “We had put this on our Facebook page last week. I think we got over 2,000 contacts just with sharing that information.”
The sheriff says that many times, emergency workers wish they had something like this before because people didn’t get the chance to say goodbye after a serious accident.
Anyone can go to the Wisconsin DMV’s website and add a person to contact right now, or you can ask for a number to be added on if you get a new driver’s license.
