The Wisconsin Maritime Museum wants to tell a story of shipbuilding that not as many people might have heard about.
A new exhibit at the museum is opening tomorrow talking about Landing Craft Tanks or LCT that were built in Manitowoc during World War II.
Communications Director Emily Shedal said on the WCUB Breakfast Club that it coincides with the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
“So, in 1942, we already had a few submarines on keel blocks being laid, the Navy contracted with the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company for 36 LCT’s,” she explained.
The first LCT was later tested in June 1942 and several people were trained to use the machines for the beaches of Normandy.
Not only will a new exhibit be opening, a LCT veteran will be there to see the new exhibit.
The new exhibit opens at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 8th.
