The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is recognizing D-Day.
Next Thursday (June 6th) will be the 80th anniversary of the day when Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, to try and take back the country and cross into Germany.
The shipbuilding tradition of Manitowoc played a significant role in this campaign’s success, ultimately turning the tide during World War II.
To honor this tradition, the museum is opening a new exhibit called “Turning the Tide of WWII: The Role of Manitowoc’s Landing Craft Tanks” (LCTs).
It explains that 13 Landing Craft Tanks, built by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company, were among nearly 7,000 ships involved in the D-Day invasion and help transported 160,000 troops ashore that day.
The exhibit features an interview with one of the LCT builders, scale models of an LCT, and authentic artifacts that witnessed the dramatic events of D-Day.
The formal opening will be held at 11 am on Saturday, June 8th.
