Some more unused train tracks in Manitowoc will be removed.
A memo from Engineering Division Manager Greg Minikel says the city has removed tracks before in different areas of the city with the oldest being by 21st and Chief Way and on Spring St. by the Burger Boat Company.
Previously, there was no formal agreement from CN Railroad, which owns the tracks. Minikel says they would send the company an email saying they want to remove the tracks, and the company would approve it.
But now the company wants the city to sign agreements that are presented to the Public Infrastructure Committee before the tracks can be taken out.
After being reviewed by City Attorney Eric Nycz, an agreement between CN and the city would have Manitowoc pay 50% if any railroad tracks were installed in areas where they were removed.
Minikel says while no one can predict the future, the city doesn’t believe the tracks will be needed anytime soon.
The Common Council approved removing train tracks at N. 18th Street and Michigan Avenue at their monthly meeting.
After the tracks are removed, the city could redo the roadway if there is too much damage.
