It will be a busy Memorial Day on the lakeshore.
The cities of Manitowoc and Two Rivers will hold Memorial Day parades and ceremonies to remember those who were killed in the line of duty or have passed away after returning home.
Manitowoc County Veteran Service Officer Todd Brehmer reminds everyone that Monday means closures of the county and local offices, but he will make sure the parade and ceremony are ready to go in Manitowoc.
“We don’t have a hard start time, but it’s after the parade,” he says. “The parade starts downtown and ends at the Veterans Memorial on Michigan and 18th Street. And when the parade is over, generally about 10-15 minutes after, approximately 10:30 am is when I try to hit, is when the ceremony will start.”
The parade runs from 8th and Washington Street through downtown before turning on Huron Street and continues onto Michigan Ave.
Rain has been predicted in the forecast and if it happens, the Memorial Day ceremony will be in the roller rink beginning at 10:30 am.
This year, speakers will include:
“Mayor Nickels, County Executive Ziegelbauer, and Representative Tittl will be there. He accepted my invitation,” he explained.
In Two Rivers, Memorial Day activities take place at 8:30 am with the reading of the honor roll and tolling of the bell to honor the 62 members of the Armed Forces who died for their country.
The parade starts at 9 am on Washington and 18th Street, north to 22nd Street, west to Forest Avenue, and north to Calvery Pioneer Rest Cemetery.
A ceremony will then be held at 9:30 am at the cemetery. If it does rain, the observance will be held at the J.E Hamilton Community House.
