The Wisconsin DNR is asking residents for comments to help keep beaches on the Great Lakes safe.
Each year, the DNR’s beach program contacts residents, local beach managers, and public health departments along Wisconsin’s Great Lakes coasts to determine any changes needed to the Wisconsin beach list and program information.
A beach is defined as any place where the public has recreational access to the water, regardless of whether the location is used for swimming or boat launches.
DNR Beach Program Manager Diane Packett says public comments ensure the Wisconsin beach list reflects locally used names, along with the status of beaches and boat launches due to changing natural conditions and public access.
Some beaches on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior could get coordinates and beach lengths changed, but none around Manitowoc County.
Funding to keep the beaches safe comes from the BEACH Act, which requires public input so the DNR can keep getting money to keep the areas safe.
You can find out which beaches around Manitowoc County are monitored on the Wisconsin DNR’s website.
