A special ceremony in Two Rivers recognized residents who paid the ultimate price.
Eight banners were hung in Central Park East Wednesday morning (May 22nd) with the names of those who died in the Civil War through Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Each banner was presented by a member of the VFW Post 1248 and American Legion Post 165 to a member of the Parks and Recreation Department before they were placed on light poles in the park.
Veteran Dean Hirvela was the master of ceremony during the presentation and asked that when people see these names, they “Cherish their spirit, honor, and commitment, and that we send them our love. Let us never forget the service that they gave.”
Hirvela also expressed his feelings about seeing the names on the banners in the park saying it’s about volunteering and serving.
“You’re a different person when you put this uniform on as the rest of my fellow service brothers and sisters that are here,” he explained. “It’s just remarkable to me the recognition not only when we were this uniform, but out and about.”
This was the first and what seems to be the only time this will be done.
The banners will be put up in the future by the Parks department.
They will stay up until Veterans Day and will be put up again until Memorial Day of next year.
