Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels
The state of the City of Manitowoc is strong.
Those words come from Mayor Justin Nickels during his annual State of the City address during Monday’s Common Council meeting.
After companies like the Manitowoc Crane Company and Mirro left, it wasn’t known what would become of the city.
But after years of investment, the mayor says the city is stronger than ever, especially with the diversity of industry in the now full Manitowoc Industrial Park.
“Companies like Ammo, Red Line Plastics, Dramm, Bank First, Color Craft, and Kaysun all added on or built new in the industrial park within the last 24 months,” he said. “Those are all brand new businesses, some of them are long-term businesses in the city. But Ammo, Red Line, those are brand new businesses that opened in the industrial park.”
He also highlighted that the value of the city went up from $2 billion to $3 billion in a little less than 5 years.
Nickels continued saying housing is still a focus plus more continued work on parks around town, especially the smaller ones.
“Riverview Park, Lower Schute, Rheaume, Halverson, Pulaski,” he described. “All those parks have new equipment; we’ve invested in the restrooms to clean them up. We’re investing in security; cameras are going in at several parks to help with safety.”
He also highlighted future building projects like the development that could be coming to the former Lakeshore Mall property and finishing the cleanup at the Mirro property.
He completed his speech by thanking the common council for their work and support because everything else being done will benefit the citizens.
