The Manitowoc County Mariners struggled on the road over the weekend, falling to the Fox River Raiders 24-6.
The lone score for the Mariners came on a brotherly connection, as Marcos Alfaro II tossed a 30-yard touchdown to Miguel Alfaro, his younger brother and a rookie on the team.
That was part of a 16-24, 249-yard day for the quarterback, with 8 of those catches coming by Austin Isley, who had 88 yards on the day.
Defensively, linebacker Carson Schemenauer recorded six tackles, a fumble recovery, and a forced fumble.
The Mariners will have their home opener this Saturday (May 18th) at Rubick Field against the Brown County Blackjacks.
Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Sheboygan County SaberCats started their season with a win, as they took down the Fox Valley Eagles 56-0.
The Cats jumped out to an 18-0 lead after the 1st quarter and tacked on 16 in the second.
They cruised the rest of the way to start the season 1-0.
The Cats have an unscheduled bye week this week, as the team they were supposed to play folded prior to the start of the season, so the Cats will next be in action on the road against the Eau Claire Cowboys on June 1st.
