If you live in Manitowoc, make sure you keep mowing your lawn this month.
The city of Manitowoc last week announced they will not be participating in No Mow May.
The reason for the month is to recognize the importance of pollinating insects like bees and allowing them to get a head start on getting pollen when they’ve come out of hibernation during Spring.
Manitowoc, however, has an ordinance for noxious weeds, which includes tall grass, lawns, or weeds of any kind over eight inches in height.
If the city gets a complaint, property owners will get one notice to cut their grass, and if they don’t, they will face a $300 fine.
You can find more information about the City’s Noxious Weed Ordinance on the City’s website by clicking on Municipal Code, Chapter 13 Sanitation and Recycling.
No Mow May became big in 2020 when enough organizers were able to convince the Appleton City Council to suspend their weed ordinance for the month of May, and while no group officially oversees it, many Bee City USA and Bee Campus USA affiliated cities usually participate.
