This week is National Police Week.
President John F. Kennedy created a national holiday in 1962 to honor those who give themselves every day to help keep our communities safe.
As a part of that proclamation, he also created National Peace Officers Day, which is a day to honor the men and women in law enforcement who have died in the line of duty.
Every year, the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office, Manitowoc Police Department, Two Rivers Police Department, and Kiel Police Department gather for a ceremony between the Courthouse and the Jail to honor the ten officers killed in the line of duty throughout the County.
The most recent local police officer to die in the line of duty was Manitowoc Police Patrolman Dale TenHaken, who was shot during a traffic stop on the north side of the city on September 23rd, 1998.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 2:45 Wednesday afternoon (May 15th).
