The Manitowoc County Human Services Department is recognizing May as Foster Care Month.
But Karen Zahn with the County Foster Care program says while the month is special, they are always looking for foster families.
A foster child would stay with a foster family while their real family figures out whatever situation they’re in.
To be a foster, Zahn says you must be at least 21 years old and allow the services department to see where you live to ensure the environment is good.
Then the parent or parents could decide what kind of child they want to foster.
“They do what’s called a safe compatibility inventory,” she explained. “It’s where they let us know what behaviors, what situations they’d be comfortable with.”
The department also tries to keep sibling groups together and in areas where they can stay in school to keep a sense of normalcy in their lives.
When it comes to the environment, pets do play a factor.
“Some people have unusual type animals,” she stated. “Snakes are not allowed. But people have things like hermit crabs, rabbits, lizards, and all kinds of cool things. So, usually, we can get an exception for those but if they have dogs and cats, they have to be vaccinated for rabies. That’s a definite requirement by the state.”
To celebrate the month, the human service department will be having a Bingo night for all involved in foster care.
