With May being National Moving Month, the Better Business Bureau is reminding everyone that scammers in the industry can hurt your pocketbook if you’re not careful.
Jim Temmer with the BBB says it’s important to research a moving company to avoid falling victim to a scam.
Temmer advises getting everything in writing from the moving company before starting the moving process.
“The pickup time and date, the delivery time and date,” he stated.
“It should be right when it’s expected and easily identified so you don’t have any questions. And keep an inventory of your belongings. An inventory sheet is the best way to keep track of your stuff.”
There are several warning signs to avoid a moving company, including if they give an offer over the phone rather than come to your house and tell you to pay in full before the move.
Temmer also explained scams that could happen when a moving company shows up including charging extra fees after loading a truck or just not showing up at all.
He continues by saying if you have a question, ask it, and if a moving company makes you feel uncomfortable the process of moving isn’t going to be easy.
“So, look around, plan ahead, and do your homework,” he says, “There’s so much going on when you move that this should be something hopefully that can go off without a hitch.”
In 2023, 1.5 million inquiries were made on their website about moving companies, and close to 6,000 complaints were filed.
