The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office has named their Officer of the Year.
Dakota Gomez started his career with the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office in March 2022 as a deputy sheriff.
Once employed, he hit the ground running, excelling during the night shift with his motivation and self-initiated contacts.
He was recognized at an annual banquet, where he earned the Merit Award for his initiative in helping apprehend and solve a multi-agency state and check fraud operation that was responsible for well over $500,000 in stolen funds.
Gomez currently works for the SWAT Team and is an instructor in Vehicle Contacts.
Sergeant Steve Smith was also named the Corrections Officer of the Year.
Smith began his career with the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office as a corrections officer in October 2018.
In March of 2022, Steve was promoted to the position of Jail Sergeant.
Though only having 3 1/2 years of experience, he demonstrated and continues to demonstrate a positive attitude, dedication, passion, understanding, and respect for others.
Smith is currently the lead taser instructor in the jail and is responsible for ensuring our staff receives proper training in the usage of this equipment.
He enjoys the added responsibility and takes pride in teaching and mentoring those around him.
A recognition banquet will be held to honor him at the Eagles Club in Manitowoc this Saturday.
